Things I Wish I Had Known BEFORE I Started Teaching...

Based on the title above, you already know I am going to be talking about the things I wish I had known BEFORE I started teaching (that I plan to focus on in my second year). If you would prefer to watch this in video form rather than reading, click the link above! (The video is cut off because I didn't want the video to be super long! Part Two will be up this week!) Otherwise, keep on reading!

Things I Wish I Had Known BEFORE I Started Teaching:

*Absorb any and everything Hope and Wade King and Teaching And So Fourth
One word: AMAZING teachers. Like I said in my GYTO Recap, Hope and Wade (and Amy Lemons!) filled in those gaps I knew I had during my first year.

*You are NOT going to cry everyday.
Maybe you will. I'm an easy cryer and recall only crying maybe once or twice. Never in front of the kids.

*Get to know your team!
This should go without saying. I work with a FABULOUS third grade team who answered every question I had, no matter how silly I felt asking it! I learned that I could just ask straightforward without fluffing that email or text message with unnecessary information in an attempt to sound less stupid. Just ASK them.

*Don't buy too much over the summer!!
I KNOW it's super tempting. I've seen brand new teachers already doing the same thing this year.

*You don't have to take every bit of advice you get and you should never feel guilty for it.
I was told what to eat, what time to go to bed, what time to leave school, how to decorate my room (LOL), and other little tidbits that I didn't ask for. I knew what I wanted in my classroom, I knew what time to go to bed so I could feel the most awake, I left school when I wanted, and I figured out an eating plan that worked for me.

It's Almost Over....

My first year in Kindergarten is coming to a close. As I prepare to shut my classroom down for the summer, I am reflecting on the year. It was such a whirlwind, to say the least. I feel like I never really got a chance to stop and really breathe before I had to hit the ground running again and again. Those sweet kindergarteners have taught me so much about myself as a person and as a teacher. We have laughed together, cried together, but most important of all, we have learned together. I never imagined I would love teaching a grade so much, but I truly do. Kindergarten is my place. Don't get me wrong, this job is HARD. It is so hard, but it is also so very rewarding. I spend a year molding children who have little to no school experience into students who love learning and drink whatever knowledge you pour into them. They love to read, they're excited about math, and they come in everyday ready to see what we're going to learn next. I LOVE this job! As I make my end of ...

Upcoming Book Studies!!

Hello dear friends! I have not posted in FOREVER!!! Life has been crazy busy and I finally feel like I can breathe a little. I am at the point where I am already making changes in my classroom for next year and reflecting on my teaching to improve for my next group of kiddos. I saw a post somewhere that really resonated with my feelings - this is the perfect time to try something new with kids you already know and since it's new for them, it helps with your classroom management to mix things up a little! I am finally taking time to actually read through two books that have been sitting around my apartment, BEGGING to be opened and for more time to be spent reading instead of skimming! Both are by the amazing Debbie Diller! I am still waiting to get my hands on her Math Workstations book, and will do another book study on that one! For now, I am going to end this post with the chapter breakdown. I will start with Spaces and Places so that I can figure out any changes BEFORE this...
